Abraham, first called Abram, was the patriarch whom God called out of Ur to a land He would show him, promising him descendants, a great name, and blessing for all the families of the earth. Genesis says he believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness.

Anna was a prophetess of the tribe of Asher, a widow of great age who never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer. When Jesus was presented she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to everyone waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.

Caiaphas was the high priest in Jerusalem during the ministry and trial of Jesus. Herod the Great was the Rome-appointed king of Judea at the time of Jesus' birth. Disturbed by the magi's question about a newborn king, he tried to use them to find the child, then ordered the killing of the boys of Bethlehem. He died soon after, and Joseph brought the family back from Egypt.
