Abraham

Abraham, first called Abram, was the patriarch whom God called out of Ur to a land He would show him, promising him descendants, a great name, and blessing for all the families of the earth. Genesis says he believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness.

Why it matters. Matthew opens his Gospel by calling Jesus the son of Abraham, and Paul presents Abraham's faith as the pattern for everyone who trusts Christ.
