Stephen
Stephen was one of seven men chosen by the Jerusalem church to oversee the daily distribution to widows, described as full of faith and the Holy Spirit. Accused of speaking against the temple, he retold Israel's history before the council and was stoned, praying for his killers as he died.
Why it matters. Stephen is the first follower of Jesus recorded as dying for Him, and his death sets in motion the scattering that carried the Gospel out of Jerusalem.
