Abraham, first called Abram, was the patriarch whom God called out of Ur to a land He would show him, promising him descendants, a great name, and blessing for all the families of the earth. Genesis says he believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness.

Anna was a prophetess of the tribe of Asher, a widow of great age who never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer. When Jesus was presented she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to everyone waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.

Caiaphas was the high priest in Jerusalem during the ministry and trial of Jesus. Cornelius was a centurion of the Italian Regiment stationed at Caesarea, a devout and generous man who feared God. An angel told him to send for Peter, and while Peter preached in his house the Holy Spirit fell on Cornelius and everyone with him, and they were baptized.

Herod Antipas, a son of Herod the Great, ruled Galilee and Perea as tetrarch during the ministry of Jesus. He imprisoned and executed John the Baptist, was curious and uneasy about Jesus, and in Luke's account questioned and mocked Him during the Passion before sending Him back to Pilate.

Herod the Great was the Rome-appointed king of Judea at the time of Jesus' birth. Disturbed by the magi's question about a newborn king, he tried to use them to find the child, then ordered the killing of the boys of Bethlehem. He died soon after, and Joseph brought the family back from Egypt.
