Nicodemus
Nicodemus was a Pharisee and a leader of the Jews who came to Jesus at night and heard that a person must be born again to see the kingdom of God. He later urged the council to give Jesus a hearing and, after the crucifixion, brought spices to help Joseph of Arimathea bury Him.
Why it matters. Nicodemus's night conversation is where John's Gospel sets out the new birth and God's love for the world, and his later actions show a cautious inquirer becoming a public friend of Jesus.
