Also known as King David, David son of Jesse

David was the shepherd from Bethlehem who became Israel's second king. God promised him a house and a throne that would endure forever, and many psalms are attributed to him. The Gospels present Jesus as the Son of David, the promised heir to that throne.

Why it matters. The Davidic covenant is one of the main Old Testament threads that the New Testament ties to Jesus.
