Isaiah
Also known as Isaiah son of Amoz, Esaias
Isaiah was the prophet in Jerusalem during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah whose book the New Testament quotes more than any other prophet. His oracles of the virgin's son, the light in Galilee, the Spirit-anointed preacher, and the suffering servant are read by the Gospels as fulfilled in Jesus.
Why it matters. More than any other prophet, Isaiah supplies the language the Gospels use to explain who Jesus is and what His ministry means.
