Simeon

Also known as Simeon of Jerusalem

Simeon was a righteous and devout man in Jerusalem who had been promised by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before seeing the Lord's Christ. Led into the temple when the infant Jesus was presented, he took the child in his arms, blessed God, and spoke of a light for the Gentiles and a sword for Mary.

Why it matters. Simeon's song is the first explicit statement in Luke that the salvation prepared in Jesus is for all peoples, and his warning to Mary is the first hint of the cross.
