Joseph of Arimathea

Joseph of Arimathea was a wealthy member of the council who had not agreed to its verdict against Jesus and who, John says, was a disciple in secret. After the crucifixion he asked Pilate for the body, wrapped it in linen, and laid it in his own new rock-cut tomb before the Sabbath.

Why it matters. Joseph gives the burial its witness and its place. A member of the very council that condemned Jesus ensures He is buried with honor, and his tomb is where the resurrection is first discovered.
