Person New Testament

Peter

Also known as Simon Peter, Simon, Cephas

Peter, originally Simon, was a fisherman from Galilee whom Jesus called to follow Him and renamed Peter. He confessed Jesus as the Christ, denied Him during the trial, was restored after the resurrection, and preached the first sermon at Pentecost.

Why it matters. Peter's story shows both the failure and the restoration of a disciple, and his Pentecost sermon is the first public proclamation of the risen Jesus.
