Mary Magdalene
Also known as Mary of Magdala
Mary Magdalene was a follower of Jesus from whom, Luke says, seven demons had gone out. She was present at the crucifixion, went to the tomb early on the first day of the week, and in John's account was the first person to see the risen Jesus and to announce it to the disciples.
Why it matters. All four Gospels name her among the first witnesses of the empty tomb, which is why her testimony anchors the resurrection accounts.
