Person New Testament
Philip the evangelist
Also known as Philip the deacon, Philip, one of the Seven
Philip was one of the seven chosen with Stephen to serve the Jerusalem church. Scattered by the persecution, he preached in Samaria, explained Isaiah 53 to an Ethiopian official on the road to Gaza and baptized him, and later settled in Caesarea, where Acts calls him the evangelist.
Why it matters. Philip carries the Gospel across the lines of Samaria and Ethiopia before Paul's journeys begin. He is distinct from Philip the apostle.
