Ananias of Damascus
Ananias was a disciple in Damascus, described by Paul as a devout observer of the law respected by the Jews there. Sent by the Lord in a vision, he overcame his fear of the persecutor, laid hands on Saul so that his sight returned, and baptized him.

Andrew was a fisherman from Bethsaida, the brother of Simon Peter and originally a disciple of John the Baptist. In John's Gospel he follows Jesus after John points Him out as the Lamb of God and then brings his brother Simon to Jesus; in the Synoptics he is called with Peter beside the Sea of Galilee.

Anna
Anna was a prophetess of the tribe of Asher, a widow of great age who never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer. When Jesus was presented she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to everyone waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.

Barabbas was a prisoner held in Jerusalem at Passover, described as notorious, an insurrectionist, and a murderer in the different Gospel accounts. When Pilate offered the crowd a Passover release, the chief priests persuaded them to ask for Barabbas and to demand that Jesus be crucified.

Barnabas was a Levite from Cyprus named Joseph, whom the apostles called Son of Encouragement. He sold a field for the church, vouched for the newly converted Saul in Jerusalem, was sent to Antioch, brought Saul there to teach, and traveled with him on the first missionary journey.

Caiaphas
Caiaphas was the high priest in Jerusalem during the ministry and trial of Jesus. The chief priests met in his courtyard to plan the arrest, and at his house Jesus was put under oath, declared Himself the Son of Man at God's right hand, and was judged worthy of death. John records that Caiaphas had earlier said it was better for one man to die for the people.

Cleopas was one of the two disciples who walked to Emmaus on the day of the resurrection. He told the stranger who joined them everything that had happened in Jerusalem, listened as the stranger explained the Scriptures, and recognized Jesus when the bread was broken at their table.

Cornelius
Cornelius was a centurion of the Italian Regiment stationed at Caesarea, a devout and generous man who feared God. An angel told him to send for Peter, and while Peter preached in his house the Holy Spirit fell on Cornelius and everyone with him, and they were baptized.

Elijah
Elijah was the prophet from Tishbe in Gilead who confronted King Ahab and the prophets of Baal, was fed by ravens and by a widow in Zarephath, raised the widow's son, and was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind. Malachi promised his return before the Day of the Lord, and Jesus identified John the Baptist with that promise.

Elizabeth was a descendant of Aaron, the wife of the priest Zechariah, righteous and childless until old age. God gave her a son, John the Baptist. When the pregnant Mary visited her, she was filled with the Holy Spirit and blessed Mary as the mother of her Lord.

Herod Antipas, a son of Herod the Great, ruled Galilee and Perea as tetrarch during the ministry of Jesus. He imprisoned and executed John the Baptist, was curious and uneasy about Jesus, and in Luke's account questioned and mocked Him during the Passion before sending Him back to Pilate.

Herod the Great
Herod the Great was the Rome-appointed king of Judea at the time of Jesus' birth. Disturbed by the magi's question about a newborn king, he tried to use them to find the child, then ordered the killing of the boys of Bethlehem. He died soon after, and Joseph brought the family back from Egypt.

Isaiah was the prophet in Jerusalem during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah whose book the New Testament quotes more than any other prophet. His oracles of the virgin's son, the light in Galilee, the Spirit-anointed preacher, and the suffering servant are read by the Gospels as fulfilled in Jesus.

James was a Galilean fisherman, the son of Zebedee and brother of John, called by Jesus while mending nets beside the Sea of Galilee. He was one of the three disciples present at the raising of Jairus's daughter and at the transfiguration, and Acts records that Herod Agrippa had him killed by the sword.

Jonah was the prophet from Gath-hepher sent to preach in Nineveh. He fled by sea, was swallowed by a great fish for three days and three nights, and after his deliverance preached to Nineveh, which repented. Jesus named the sign of Jonah as the one sign His generation would receive.

Joseph of Arimathea was a wealthy member of the council who had not agreed to its verdict against Jesus and who, John says, was a disciple in secret. After the crucifixion he asked Pilate for the body, wrapped it in linen, and laid it in his own new rock-cut tomb before the Sabbath.

Joseph was a descendant of David who was betrothed to Mary. Matthew describes him as a righteous man who, guided by dreams, took Mary as his wife, named the child Jesus, and protected the family by fleeing to Egypt and later settling in Nazareth.

Judas Iscariot was one of the Twelve and, according to John, kept the group's money and stole from it. He agreed with the chief priests to hand Jesus over for thirty pieces of silver, identified Him with a kiss in Gethsemane, and afterward, filled with remorse, returned the money and took his own life.

Lazarus lived in Bethany with his sisters Martha and Mary and was a friend of Jesus. When he died, Jesus came to Bethany, wept, and called him out of the tomb four days after his burial. The sign led many to believe and moved the council to plot Jesus's death.

Martha was the sister of Mary and Lazarus in Bethany. Luke records her serving while her sister listened at Jesus's feet, and John records her going out to meet Jesus after Lazarus died and confessing that He is the Christ, the Son of God, before He raised her brother.

Philip was one of the seven chosen with Stephen to serve the Jerusalem church. Scattered by the persecution, he preached in Samaria, explained Isaiah 53 to an Ethiopian official on the road to Gaza and baptized him, and later settled in Caesarea, where Acts calls him the evangelist.

Pontius Pilate was the Roman prefect of Judea who presided over the trial of Jesus. The Gospels record that he found no basis for a charge, yet handed Jesus over to be crucified under pressure from the crowd and the religious leaders.

Simeon was a righteous and devout man in Jerusalem who had been promised by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before seeing the Lord's Christ. Led into the temple when the infant Jesus was presented, he took the child in his arms, blessed God, and spoke of a light for the Gentiles and a sword for Mary.

Simon of Cyrene was a man from North Africa who was coming in from the country as Jesus was led out to be crucified. The soldiers compelled him to carry the cross behind Jesus. Mark names his sons, Alexander and Rufus, as though known to his readers.

Stephen was one of seven men chosen by the Jerusalem church to oversee the daily distribution to widows, described as full of faith and the Holy Spirit. Accused of speaking against the temple, he retold Israel's history before the council and was stoned, praying for his killers as he died.

Thomas, called Didymus, was one of the Twelve. John records him offering to die with Jesus, asking how the disciples could know the way, refusing to believe the resurrection without touching the wounds, and then confessing the risen Jesus as his Lord and God.

Zechariah was a priest of the division of Abijah serving in the temple when Gabriel told him his elderly wife Elizabeth would bear a son named John. Because he doubted, he was silent until the child was named. His speech returned in a prophecy about the dawn from on high visiting God's people.
