- Event
Creation
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth, ordered the world by His word, and made humanity, male and female, in His own image to rule and care for it. The New Testament adds that everything was made through the Word who became flesh in Jesus.
Focus this layer - Event
The Passover and the exodus
On the night God struck down the firstborn of Egypt, every Israelite household sheltered behind the blood of a lamb on its doorframe, and God passed over them. Pharaoh released the people, and when his army pursued them God parted the sea so Israel crossed on dry ground.
Focus this layer - Event
The birth of Jesus
Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea to Mary, a virgin betrothed to Joseph, during the reign of Herod the Great. Luke records the manger and the angels' announcement to shepherds; Matthew records Joseph's obedience and the visit of the magi.
Focus this layer - Event
The presentation in the temple
Joseph and Mary brought the infant Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord and offer the sacrifice the law required of a poor family. Simeon, promised he would see the Lord's Christ, took the child in his arms and called Him a light for the nations; the prophetess Anna gave thanks and spoke of Him to all who waited for redemption.
Focus this layer - Event
The visit of the magi
Magi from the east followed a star to Jerusalem asking where the king of the Jews had been born. Herod's scribes pointed them to Bethlehem from Micah's prophecy, and the magi found the child with Mary, worshiped Him, and gave gold, frankincense, and myrrh before slipping home by another road.
Focus this layer - Event
The flight to Egypt
Warned in a dream, Joseph took the child and His mother to Egypt by night. Herod, enraged at the magi, had every boy in Bethlehem two years old and under killed. After Herod's death Joseph brought the family back to the land of Israel and settled in Nazareth in Galilee.
Focus this layer - Event
The boy Jesus in the temple
When Jesus was twelve, His family went up to Jerusalem for the Passover. On the way home His parents realized He was missing and found Him three days later in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers. Asked why, He replied that He had to be in His Father's house.
Focus this layer - Event
The baptism of Jesus
Jesus was baptized by John in the Jordan River. As He came up from the water the Spirit descended on Him like a dove and a voice from heaven declared Him the beloved Son. This marks the public beginning of His ministry.
Focus this layer - Event
The temptation of Jesus
After His baptism the Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness, where He fasted forty days and was tempted by the devil to turn stones into bread, to throw Himself from the temple, and to gain the kingdoms of the world by worship. He answered each with words from Deuteronomy, and angels ministered to Him.
Focus this layer - Event
The calling of the first disciples
Beside the Sea of Galilee Jesus called two pairs of fishermen, Simon and Andrew, then James and John, to follow Him and become fishers of men, and they left their nets and their father's boat at once. John's Gospel records that Andrew and Simon had first met Jesus near the Jordan after John the Baptist pointed Him out.
Focus this layer - Event
The wedding at Cana
At a wedding in Cana of Galilee the wine ran out, and at His mother's prompting Jesus had six stone jars filled with water and turned it into wine of the best quality. John calls this the first of His signs, by which He revealed His glory and His disciples believed in Him.
Focus this layer - Event
Nicodemus comes to Jesus at night
Nicodemus, a Pharisee and member of the council, came to Jesus at night. Jesus told him that no one can see the kingdom of God without being born again, of water and the Spirit, compared His coming lifting up to Moses's bronze serpent, and spoke of God's love in giving His only Son so that whoever believes may have eternal life.
Focus this layer - Event
The Samaritan woman at the well
At Jacob's well near Sychar Jesus asked a Samaritan woman for a drink and offered her living water. He told her about her life, spoke of worship in spirit and truth, and told her plainly that He is the Messiah. She brought her town to Him, and after two days many Samaritans confessed Him as the Savior of the world.
Focus this layer - Event
The rejection at Nazareth
In the synagogue of His hometown Jesus read Isaiah's words about the Spirit-anointed preacher of good news and declared the Scripture fulfilled that day. The people marveled, then took offense at the carpenter's son, and in Luke's account tried to throw Him from the hill on which the town was built.
Focus this layer - Event
The Sermon on the Mount
On a mountainside in Galilee Jesus taught His disciples and the crowds: the Beatitudes, the call to be salt and light, a righteousness that goes deeper than the law's letter, the Lord's Prayer, trust in the Father, and the two ways ending in the wise and foolish builders. The crowds were astonished at His authority.
Focus this layer - Event
The healing of the paralytic
In Capernaum four men lowered a paralyzed friend through the roof to reach Jesus. Seeing their faith, Jesus first forgave the man's sins, and when the scribes objected that only God can forgive, He healed the man so that they would know the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.

Connections around Jesus
Jesus participates in Creation
Explicit in ScriptureHigh confidenceJohn says all things were made through the Word who became flesh, and Paul says all things were created through and for the Son.
Evidence:The Passover and the exodus symbolizes Jesus
Historic Christian readingHigh confidenceThe New Testament repeatedly presents Jesus in Passover terms: John the Baptist calls Him the Lamb of God, Paul calls Him our Passover lamb, Jesus dies at Passover, and Luke calls His coming death an exodus. Christians have read the whole event as a pattern of the redemption He accomplished.
Other responsible views
- Pattern, not prediction: The exodus narrative is history, not prophecy about Jesus. The correspondence is drawn by the New Testament writers looking back, which is why this is labeled a historic Christian reading rather than explicit fulfillment.

Evidence:Jesus is descended from David
Explicit in ScriptureHigh confidenceLineage: Matthew 1Matthew's genealogy traces Jesus's legal descent through Joseph to David. Luke's genealogy also reaches David by a different line; FaithGraph records the two lists separately and never merges them.
Evidence:Other responsible views
- Luke's genealogy: Luke 3:23-38 traces descent from David through Nathan rather than Solomon. The relationship between the two lists is discussed in the Lineage section.

Jesus is descended from Solomon
Explicit in ScriptureHigh confidenceLineage: Matthew 1Matthew's genealogy runs from David through Solomon and the kings of Judah to Joseph. Luke's list runs through Nathan instead; FaithGraph keeps the two separate.
Evidence:Other responsible views

Explicit in ScriptureHigh confidencePilate questions Jesus under this title and has it written on the cross.
Evidence:Jesus bears the title Lamb of God
Explicit in ScriptureHigh confidenceJohn the Baptist twice points to Jesus as the Lamb of God, once adding that He takes away the sin of the world.
Jesus bears the title Son of David
Explicit in ScriptureHigh confidenceThe crowds at the entry hail Jesus as Son of David, Bartimaeus addresses Him so, and Matthew opens with the title.
Evidence:Jesus bears the title Son of Man
Explicit in ScriptureHigh confidenceJesus calls Himself the Son of Man when He forgives the paralytic and when He predicts His suffering, and He asks the disciples who people say the Son of Man is.
Evidence:Jesus explicitly fulfills 2 Samuel 7:12-16
Explicit fulfillmentHigh confidenceGabriel tells Mary that her son will receive the throne of His father David and reign forever, language drawn from God's promise to David. Peter says David foresaw the resurrection of the promised heir, and Paul says God brought Israel a Savior from David's offspring "as He promised". These are explicit claims of fulfillment, not later inference.
Jesus explicitly fulfills Deuteronomy 18:15-19
Explicit fulfillmentHigh confidencePeter applies Moses' promise directly to Jesus, and Stephen cites the same verse in his defense.
Evidence:Jesus explicitly fulfills Genesis 12:3
Explicit fulfillmentHigh confidencePaul writes that the Scripture announced the Gospel in advance to Abraham with the words "all nations will be blessed through you", and identifies Christ as Abraham's offspring.
Jesus is read as fulfilling Genesis 22:1-18
Historic Christian readingMedium confidenceAbraham's words that God Himself will provide the lamb, the beloved only son carried up the mountain, and the ram given in his place have been read since the early church as a foreshadowing of the Father giving His Son. Hebrews and Paul echo the scene without stating the typology outright.
Other responsible views
- A test of faith in its own right: Genesis presents the binding of Isaac as the testing of Abraham's faith and the confirmation of the covenant oath. The Christological reading is an added layer, held widely but not stated by Genesis itself.
Jesus is read as fulfilling Genesis 3:15
Historic Christian readingMedium confidenceGenesis 3:15 says the offspring of the woman will crush the serpent's head. From the early church onward, Christians have read this as the first promise of Christ's victory over evil. The New Testament alludes to it (Romans 16:20) without quoting it directly, so this is labeled a historic Christian reading.
Other responsible views
- General promise of human victory over evil: Some interpreters read the verse as a broader statement about humanity and the serpent, with Christ as its climactic instance.
Jesus is read as fulfilling Genesis 49:10
Historic Christian readingMedium confidenceJacob's blessing promises that the scepter will not depart from Judah until the one to whom it belongs comes and the nations obey him. Revelation's Lion of the tribe of Judah and Hebrews' note that Jesus descended from Judah show the New Testament drawing on Judah's royal line, though neither quotes this verse.
Other responsible views
- Fulfilled in David's dynasty: Many read the blessing as fulfilled in the kingship of David's house, with the messianic sense as its fullest reach; the Hebrew of the phrase often rendered until Shiloh comes is itself uncertain.
Jesus explicitly fulfills Isaiah 42:1-4
Explicit fulfillmentHigh confidenceMatthew introduces the quotation with the formula that this was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah.
Evidence:Jesus is read as fulfilling Numbers 24:17
Historic Christian readingMedium confidenceBalaam's oracle of a star from Jacob and a scepter from Israel has been read by Christians since the early centuries as pointing to the Messiah, and Matthew's star over Bethlehem is often connected to it. The New Testament does not quote the verse, so this is labeled a historic reading.
Other responsible views
- David as the nearer referent: Many interpreters see the oracle fulfilled first in David, who conquered Moab and Edom, with a messianic sense developing later in Jewish and Christian reading.
