At a wedding in Cana of Galilee the wine ran out, and at His mother's prompting Jesus had six stone jars filled with water and turned it into wine of the best quality. John calls this the first of His signs, by which He revealed His glory and His disciples believed in Him.
Why it matters. The first sign is an act of quiet generosity at a family celebration, and John says it revealed His glory.
