Egypt is the great kingdom on the Nile where Jacob's family settled, where Israel was enslaved for generations, and from which God brought them out at the exodus. Centuries later Joseph carried the infant Jesus there to escape Herod, and Matthew heard in the return the words of Hosea: out of Egypt I called my son.

Why it matters. Egypt is the place of slavery and of refuge. The exodus from it is the Old Testament's defining rescue, and the child Jesus retraces that path so that His story carries Israel's.
