Event New Testament

The arrest of Jesus

Also known as The betrayal in the garden, The kiss of Judas

Judas led a crowd with swords and clubs, and in John a band of soldiers, to the garden he knew Jesus frequented, and identified Him with a kiss. One disciple struck the high priest's servant, and Jesus stopped the violence and, in Luke, healed the man. He was bound and led away, and all the disciples fled.

Why it matters. Jesus is taken without resistance and says the Scriptures are being fulfilled. His disciples scatter as Zechariah foresaw, and He goes on alone.

Dates
AD 30 to 33 (approximate) (medium confidence, Passover week of the crucifixion under Pontius Pilate; AD 30 and AD 33 are the leading proposals)

The event belongs to the final week before the crucifixion, which is dated to AD 30 or AD 33 on calendrical grounds. FaithGraph records the range and does not choose.

Witnesses

Chronology confidence: high

All four Gospels record the arrest. The Synoptics record the kiss of Judas; John records the soldiers falling back and Jesus asking that the disciples be let go. John names the servant Malchus and the sword- bearer Peter; Luke alone records the healing of the ear; Mark alone records the young man who fled.
