God told Abram to leave his country and family for a land He would show him, promising to make him a great nation, to bless him, and to bless all the families of the earth through him. Abram went, at seventy-five, and built altars in the land of Canaan.

God bound Himself by covenant to Abram: descendants as many as the stars, a land for them, and an everlasting relationship in which God would be their God. Abram believed, and it was credited to him as righteousness. God later gave him the name Abraham and the sign of circumcision.
