The Gospels present Him as the promised Messiah of Israel, the eternal Word made flesh, who taught, healed, was crucified under Pontius Pilate, rose bodily on the third day, and commissioned His followers to carry the good news to all nations.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth, ordered the world by His word, and made humanity, male and female, in His own image to rule and care for it. The New Testament adds that everything was made through the Word who became flesh in Jesus.

The Passover and the exodus
On the night God struck down the firstborn of Egypt, every Israelite household sheltered behind the blood of a lamb on its doorframe, and God passed over them. Pharaoh released the people, and when his army pursued them God parted the sea so Israel crossed on dry ground.

Abraham, first called Abram, was the patriarch whom God called out of Ur to a land He would show him, promising him descendants, a great name, and blessing for all the families of the earth. Genesis says he believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness.

David was the shepherd from Bethlehem who became Israel's second king. God promised him a house and a throne that would endure forever, and many psalms are attributed to him. The Gospels present Jesus as the Son of David, the promised heir to that throne.

Jonah was the prophet from Gath-hepher sent to preach in Nineveh. He fled by sea, was swallowed by a great fish for three days and three nights, and after his deliverance preached to Nineveh, which repented. Jesus named the sign of Jonah as the one sign His generation would receive.

Judah was the fourth son of Jacob and Leah, the ancestor of the tribe that gave Israel its kings. Jacob's blessing promised that the scepter would not depart from Judah, and through his son Perez the line runs to Boaz, Jesse, and David.

Solomon was David's son by Bathsheba who succeeded him as king, asked God for wisdom, and built the first temple in Jerusalem. His reign was the height of Israel's peace and wealth, but his foreign marriages and idolatry led God to announce the division of the kingdom after his death.

Egypt is the great kingdom on the Nile where Jacob's family settled, where Israel was enslaved for generations, and from which God brought them out at the exodus. Centuries later Joseph carried the infant Jesus there to escape Herod, and Matthew heard in the return the words of Hosea: out of Egypt I called my son.

Resurrection is God raising the dead to bodily life. The Old Testament glimpses it in Job, the Psalms, Isaiah, and Daniel; the Gospels narrate the raising of Jesus on the third day; and Paul calls Him the firstfruits, the first of a harvest that includes everyone who belongs to Him.

Lamb of God is the title John the Baptist gave Jesus at the Jordan: the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. It gathers up the Passover lamb, the lamb Abraham said God would provide, and Isaiah's servant led like a lamb, and Revelation makes the Lamb its central figure.

Son of David is a royal title for the promised king from David's line. Matthew opens with it, blind Bartimaeus and the crowds at the entry use it of Jesus, and Jesus Himself raises the question of how David's son can also be David's Lord.

Son of Man is the title Jesus used for Himself more than any other. The covenant with David
When David wanted to build a house for God, God answered that He would build David a house: a descendant whose throne would be established forever, whom God would treat as a son. The promise outlasted David's failures and the fall of his kingdom.
