Mount Sinai
Also known as Horeb, The mountain of God
Mount Sinai, also called Horeb, is the mountain where God spoke to Moses from the burning bush and where, after the exodus, He gave Israel the ten commandments and made a covenant with them amid fire, cloud, and trumpet sound.
Why it matters. Sinai is where Israel became a covenant people under the law. Hebrews sets the terror of that mountain against the joy of Mount Zion and the new covenant mediated by Jesus.

The traditional site is Jebel Musa in the southern Sinai Peninsula, identified since at least the fourth century. Other candidates have been proposed in the peninsula and in northwest Arabia. FaithGraph records the traditional site and labels the identification disputed.
