Emmaus

Emmaus was a village about seven miles from Jerusalem, known only from Luke's account of the two disciples who walked there on the day of the resurrection and recognized Jesus when He broke bread at their table.

Why it matters. Emmaus is the setting of the conversation in which the risen Jesus explains the Scriptures about Himself.

Luke gives the distance as about seven miles (sixty stadia) from Jerusalem but no direction. Candidate sites include Emmaus Nicopolis (Imwas), which is farther than sixty stadia, and closer villages such as el-Qubeibeh and Abu Ghosh.
