On the night God struck down the firstborn of Egypt, every Israelite household sheltered behind the blood of a lamb on its doorframe, and God passed over them. Pharaoh released the people, and when his army pursued them God parted the sea so Israel crossed on dry ground.

Sacrifice and atonement is the biblical pattern by which sin is covered and fellowship with God restored through a life given in place of the guilty. The New Testament proclaims that Jesus offered Himself once for all.
